Biodiversity and Habitat
Economic puzzle
Biodiversity can generate ecological, option, cultural, and existence values that are not fully priced in land markets. Habitat protection also carries opportunity costs that vary across parcels and communities.
Question directions
- When can conservation banking lower the cost of meeting a habitat target?
- How would stated-preference or benefit-transfer estimates change a land-use decision?
- Which habitats are both biologically important and economically vulnerable to conversion?
- How should policy handle ecological thresholds and irreversibility?
Model hook
Compare the marginal social benefit of protected habitat with its opportunity and management cost. Make spatial complementarity explicit: ten disconnected acres need not provide the same ecological service as ten connected acres.
Official starting evidence
- USGS GAP species-data downloads provide species range, predicted habitat, and related landscape layers.
- The USGS species habitat download tool supports exploration of national GAP models.
- Federal and state endangered-species documents can identify listing decisions, habitat plans, and policy rules.
Feasible unit of analysis
Select one species, habitat type, or conservation program. If you transfer a value estimate from another study, justify similarities in the population, ecological change, policy setting, and unit of value.
A predicted-habitat layer is a model, not a census of animals on every mapped cell. Keep habitat suitability, observed occurrence, population viability, and economic value distinct.
